Taken by Zamenhof from German je, the first half of je mehr... desto mehr ('the more... the more'). The answering half of the German pair, desto, became Esperanto des.

is the opening move of a two-part construction and never appears without its partner: X, Y, the more X, the more Y. The clause states the condition, the clause the consequence, and each half carries or . English recycles the same "the" for both halves, which is why learners keep writing ... ; that is simply wrong, and the fix is to remember the pair as one unit.
