Transitive, always: you prepare something, and if the something is yourself you have to say so. English lets "I'm preparing for the exam" stand alone, but Esperanto wants or as, with -- doing the same job more tidily. What you are preparing for arrives with . is the state you end up in, preparo the act, and o the drawn-out business of preparing over days rather than any single session.
