French · Chapter 22 · Lesson 9 · Common mistake

devoir or falloir?

One says who has to. The other just says it has to happen.

The rule

devoir attaches the obligation to a PERSON: je dois partir. falloir is impersonal and only ever appears as il faut, which states that something must happen without saying who must do it. Il faut partir means somebody has to go, and often that somebody is everybody.
