Ch 22 · Lesson 17

Si j'avais su: the unreal now and the unreal past

+ imparfait, then the conditional ( , ); + --, then the past conditional ( , ).

The short version

Unreal now: + imparfait. Unreal past: + pluperfect

, .

If I had known, I would have come.
Why?

For something that is not true now, takes the imparfait and the result the conditional: , . For something that did not happen, takes the -- and the result the past conditional, or plus the participle: , .

Type 2: the unreal present

the verb after sithe verb in the resultWhat do the colours mean?

The condition is not true now: you are imagining. After , the imparfait; in the result, the conditional.

  • , . - If I had time, I would come. (I don't have time)
  • , ? - If you were rich, what would you do?
  • , Rome. - If she spoke Italian, she would work in Rome.

It is English if I had... I would... exactly. The imparfait here says nothing about the past: it marks the condition as unreal.

Type 3: the unreal past

the verb after sithe verb in the resultthe auxiliary, in the conditionalWhat do the colours mean?

The condition did not happen: you are rewriting the past, which makes this the pattern of regret. After , the plus-que-parfait; in the result, the past conditional.

The past conditional is the conditional of or plus the past participle, with the same auxiliary as the :

I did becomes I would have done
VerbPast conditionalEnglish
I would have done
I would have come
she would have succeeded

Put the two halves together:

  • , . - If I had known, I would have come.
  • , . - If you had listened to me, you would not have made that mistake.
  • , . - If we had left earlier, we would have arrived on time.

is worth learning whole: it is the everyday French for had I known. The full past conditional is on the conditionnel passé page.

Going further: Type 1: real and likely and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
