Ch 22 · Lesson 9

Il était déjà parti: when to use the pluperfect

The earlier of two past events ( , ), reported speech ( a ) and regret ( ).

The short version

The earlier of two past events takes the pluperfect

, .

When I got to the station, the train had already left.
Why?

When two things happened in the past, the one that came first goes in the -- and the later one in the . , means he had gone before you came; , means he left as you arrived.

Use 1: the earlier of two past events

the auxiliary, the part that movesfeminine agreementplural agreementWhat do the colours mean?

When two things happened in the past, the one that came first goes in the --. The later one stays in the or the imperfect.

  • le train était parti (first: plus-que-parfait)

  • je suis arrivé à la gare (then: passé composé)

Timeline from past to now, with now marked.

  • , . - When I got to the station, the train had already left.
  • . - I had finished my work when my friends came round.
  • . - She was tired because she had not slept.

The tense changes the story. Compare:

plus-- , .he had gone before I came
, .he left as I came

(already) and ... (never) sit naturally with this tense:

  • . - She had never seen the sea.

Use 2: reported speech

the auxiliary, the part that movesfeminine agreementplural agreementWhat do the colours mean?

When you report in the past what someone said had happened, their normally becomes a --, as English I have finished becomes he said he had finished.

The glosses: He said he had finished. She said she had arrived late. They said they had seen the film. The whole shift, present to imperfect and future to conditional too, is on reported speech.

Use 3: si j'avais su

the auxiliary, the part that movesfeminine agreementplural agreementWhat do the colours mean?

After , the -- a past that did not happen. The result goes in the past conditional ( or + participle):

  • , . - If I had known, I would not have come.
  • , . - If you had listened to me, you would not have made that mistake.

is worth learning whole: it is the everyday French for had I known.

stays whole before j'. It shortens only before and : , . - If he had known, he would have come. All three patterns are on si clauses.
