Watch a short show about two cultures
ARTE is the Franco-German cultural channel, and its little show Karambolage explains one French or German habit, word or object in a few minutes.
Search ARTE for Karambolage and watch two of its segments about France (each lasts a few minutes; a full episode, three or four of them, runs about twelve). Then write two sentences in French: what you learned, and whether the same thing exists where you live.
Subtitles in the language you are learning are the trick: you read and hear the same words at once, and your ear catches up faster than you expect.
An example you can adapt
J'ai regardé un épisode sur la baguette. En France, on achète le pain tous les jours ; chez moi, on l'achète une fois par semaine.
I watched an episode about the baguette. In France people buy bread every day; where I live, we buy it once a week.
