Ch 24 · Lesson 20

On the phone

Answering, asking for someone, and the lines that rescue a call you cannot follow.

Why these go together

The phone is harder than face to face, because there is no face. French has fixed phrases for each step of a call, and knowing them frees your attention for the part that matters. sounds like "do not leave" and means hold the line; nobody is ordering you to stay.

  • , , Sam .

    Hello, this is Sam speaking.

Literally: hello, good day, it is Sam at the device

  • Martin, .

I would like to speak to Mrs Martin, please.

  • , .

Hold the line, I will put you through to her.

Literally: do not leave, I pass her to you

  • , ?

Could you say that again, please?

  • .

I cannot hear you very well.

    Literally: I hear you badly

  • ?

    Can I leave a message?
