Ch 24 · Lesson 8

lequel: the relative after a preposition

French never strands a preposition: , the chair I am sitting on. agrees with the noun before it: , , lesquels, lesquelles.

The short version

French never leaves a preposition dangling

the chair he is sitting on
Why?

English happily ends a clause on a preposition: the chair he is sitting on. French cannot. The preposition moves to the front of the relative pronoun, and for things that pronoun is , agreeing with what it replaces: , lesquelles . Translate the English word order and you get nonsense.

is the relative pronoun French uses after a preposition: , the table I write on. It agrees with the noun it points back to, and it fuses with à and the way the article does.

The form matches the noun the clause describes. Nothing inside the clause changes it.

Six small panels with a grey cat and a yellow box: the cat sits on the box; the cat sits under the box, which stands on legs like a little table; the cat pokes its head out of the open box; the cat sits beside the box; the cat peeks over the top from behind the box with its tail sticking out; the cat sits in front of the box.

La boîte sur laquelle le chat est assis: the box the cat is sitting on. 1 sur laquelle, on which; 2 sous laquelle, under which; 3 dans laquelle, in which; 4 à côté de laquelle, beside which; 5 derrière laquelle, behind which; 6 devant laquelle, in front of which. Always laquelle, because la boîte is feminine.

The everyday prepositions all take plain : , , , , , pour, , , , , , , .

  • lesquels - the tools I cannot work without
  • - the company she works for

Going further: The lequel forms on one screen and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
