Contre exprime l'opposition (against), la proximité physique (next to, up against) et l'échange (in exchange for). Être contre (to be against) s'oppose à être pour (to be in favour of). Contre toute attente (contrary to all expectations, against all odds) est une locution très fréquente.
Par contre (on the other hand, however) est une locution concessive très courante malgré quelques puristes qui lui préfèrent en revanche. Être bien contre le mur (to be right up against the wall) et avoir quelqu'un contre soi (to have someone against you) illustrent les deux sens physique et figuré. Le pour et le contre (the pros and cons) est la formule du bilan décisionnel.
