Contrairement à l'anglais Mr, en français monsieur sans nom propre est une adresse directe très courante : oui, monsieur, bonjour monsieur. Le pluriel messieurs (Messrs ou gentlemen) s'utilise pour s'adresser à plusieurs hommes.
Monsieur en début de lettre formelle est équivalent à Dear Sir. Faire le monsieur (to put on airs) et jouer au monsieur sont des expressions légèrement moqueuses. L'écriture des abréviations suit des règles strictes : M. (monsieur), jamais Mr. en français. La forme ancienne Mon Seigneur (my lord) est à l'origine étymologique du terme.
