Modo is the ablative of modus ('measure') frozen into an adverb, and it pulls in two directions: 'only, merely' when it limits a quantity, and 'just now, a moment ago' when it fixes a time. Doubled up as modo ... modo it means 'now ... now', switching between two states. Watch for it fused onto dum: dummodo with the subjunctive means 'provided that', which is a different word doing a different job.
