Respondeo, respondere, respondi, responsum is a regular second conjugation verb, and its case pattern is the thing to fix early. The person you answer goes in the dative, mihi respondit, he answered me, while the thing you answer takes ad and the accusative, ad epistulam respondit. It is built from re and spondeo, to pledge, so the literal sense is to pledge back, and the supine responsum gives English response, responsible and respondent.
