Но and или: but and or
is the real but, for the second half that goes against the first: , . After not X, the but is still . And is or.
The short version
Not X but Y always takes a, never no
, . (Eto ne kofe, a chay.)
Why?Hide
English says it's not coffee but tea, and the but pulls learners towards no. In Russian, the correction after a negative is always a: eto ne kofe, a chay. No means but in the sense of despite, as in eto trudno, no interesno. The one exception is the fixed pair ne tolko... no i, not only... but also.
но: but, against expectation
Но is the real but. The second half goes against what the first led you to expect:
, .- I want to go, but I can't., .- It's late, but he's still working., .- It's difficult but interesting.
The test that settles almost every case: is there a despite in the meaning? Despite wanting to, I can't. If yes, . If you are merely comparing two things, .
| Word | Sentence | Why |
|---|---|---|
| и | . | both true, nothing compared |
| а | , . | two people compared |
, . | the second half defeats the first | |
| а | , . | not X but Y is always а |
In speech can carry a note of surprise, , . (it's late, and he's still working!), but is never wrong when there is a despite.
One fixed pair breaks the not-X-but-Y rule, because nothing is being cancelled, only extended:
, .- I not only speak but also write.
Two relatives of are worth recognising:
| Word | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| , . | but on the other hand: dear, but tasty |
| . | however (mostly written): he did not come |
или: or
Или (ili) is or, and behaves like its English equivalent. Doubled, it gives either... or:
?- Tea or coffee?, .- Either you or me.
The negative partner, neither... nor, is ... , and it brings a before the verb with it:
, .- Neither he nor I know.
Russian negation covers and the double negative it belongs to.
Going further: и: plain addition and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
