Ch 27 · Lesson 21

On the phone

Answering, asking who is calling, leaving a message, and the call that drops.

Why these go together

The phone strips away gesture and lip-reading, so it feels two levels harder than talking face to face. Set phrases are the answer, starting with how you pick up, which changes by country: ¿? or ¿? in Spain, ¿? in Mexico, ¿? across much of South America.

  • ¿?

    Hello? (answering the phone, Spain)

    Literally: say

  • ¿ ?

    Who is calling?

Literally: on the part of whom

  • , .

One moment, I will put them on.

Literally: a moment, now he or she comes to the phone

  • ¿ ?

Can I leave a message for them?

  • .

    We have been cut off.

Literally: the call has cut itself

  • .

I will call you in five minutes.
