Ch 44 · Lesson 15

Intensifiers: muy, -ísimo, super

The degree ladder, and the top half of it: carísimo (drop the vowel, add -ísimo), for an essay, super- and requete- for a chat.

The short version

-ísimo turns up to the top

carísimo.

The flat is incredibly expensive.
Why?

Drop the final vowel and add -ísimo: , carísimo. It agrees like any adjective (carísima, carísimos) and works in speech and writing. The spelling shifts to keep the sound: , riquísimo; , larguísimo. Never put in front: carísimo says very twice.

(very) sits in the middle of a ladder. Spanish has words to turn a quality up past it, and words to turn it down:

  • carísimo. - It's incredibly expensive.
  • . - It's a bit expensive.
