-in- makes the female member of a pair. gives , gives , gives , gives o. The result is almost always a noun in -o, and it stacks happily with other suffixes, which is how you get from .
Two things catch people out. First, looks like a derivative of a male root but - is simply the root for human male, so the word is built like any other. Second, most Esperanto roots are neutral rather than masculine: , and cover anyone, so adding -in- is a choice you make when the sex matters, not an obligation. When you want both sexes at once, - is the prefix you reach for instead.
