Iom is the quantity member of the i- series, sitting beside io, iu and iam. A quantity word joins its noun with da, never de and never a bare accusative: iom da tempo. In front of an adjective it softens rather than counts, so iom longa is a bit long. Iom post iom is the fixed phrase for little by little, and worth learning whole.
