Translation
dad, daddy
Word origin
Built inside Esperanto with the affectionate masculine suffix -cxj-, spelled ĉj, which attaches to a clipped bit of a name or kinship word. Patro ('father') is cut back to pa- and becomes paĉjo, as father becomes dad.
- Origin
- Esperanto affix formation
- Root
- pa(tro) + -ĉj- + -o
Examples
, ?
Dad, can you help me?
.
My dad works in the town.
.
The child ran to his dad.
The -- suffix is the masculine twin of --: Joĉjo from Johano is Johnny, aĉjo from is grandpa. Unusually for Esperanto, both suffixes cut the root before attaching, which is why the word is not o. Formal contexts use ; is for talking to him.
