French · Chapter 17 · Lesson 8 · Grammar primer

Demonstrative pronouns: celui, celle, ceux

celui / celle / ceux / celles for 'the one(s)', completed by -ci / -la, by de + noun (celui de Marc), or by a relative clause (celui qui parle), plus the neuter ceci / cela / ca.

The short version

Celui can never stand on its own

Celui, celle, ceux and celles are grammatically unfinished. Each has to be completed by -ci or -là, by de plus a noun, or by a relative clause. Je veux celui is broken; celui-ci, celui de Marc and celui qui parle are all fine. French has no possessive apostrophe, so celui de does the job of English 's.

Ce n'est pas mon problème, c'est celui de mon frère.

It's not my problem, it's my brother's.

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
