Listen to French radio made for the French

France Culture is France's public radio station for ideas, history and science. No concessions to learners: this is the real thing.

Find a France Culture podcast on a subject you already know something about (history and science are easiest, because you can guess the missing words). Listen to ten minutes, then write three sentences in French: the subject, one idea you understood, and how much you followed. Half is a good result at this stage.

You will not catch every word, and nobody does at first. Catching the topic and a handful of words you know is the whole win.

An example you can adapt

J'ai écouté une émission sur l'histoire de Paris. Je n'ai pas tout compris, mais j'ai suivi l'idée principale. C'est la première fois que j'écoute une vraie radio française jusqu'au bout.

I listened to a programme about the history of Paris. I did not understand everything, but I followed the main idea. It is the first time I have listened to real French radio all the way through.
