Adjective plurals: petits, petites, beaux
Add -s to either gender, -x after -eau, -aux for most -al; nothing for -s and -x. A group with one masculine noun takes the masculine plural.
The short version
One masculine noun makes the group masculine
.
Why?Hide
A plural adjective adds -s to either gender: , . When it describes a mixed group, the masculine plural wins, however many feminine nouns there are: one brother among three sisters is enough. Adjectives in -eau take -x, and most in -al become -aux.
The plural
| Rule | Masc. pl. | Fem. pl. |
|---|---|---|
| + s | | |
| -s, -x: no change | , | |
| -al to - | | |
| - to - | | |
- happy friends- national newspapers- beautiful gardens
A few -al adjectives just add -s instead (, ; , ).
The plural -s is silent, so and sound the same. You hear it only in before a vowel: is " peti-z-".
Mixed groups
A group with one masculine noun takes the masculine plural, however many feminine nouns are in it:
Paul Marie .- Paul and Marie are happy.- a white dress and white trousers
