Not to be confused with (the plural indefinite/partitive article, as in des pommes, "some apples"). is a preposition about time: it marks the exact point something starts, and it is stronger than depuis - dès says "starting right at that moment", where depuis just says "since then, up to now". The set phrase dès que ("as soon as") is one of the most useful ways to link two clauses in time.
