From Late Latin pausare ('to halt, to rest, to set down'), itself from Latin pausa ('a pause'). In French the verb absorbed senses of the Latin ponere ('to place'), which is why it now means to put down or to place.

Poser est un verbe regulier du premier groupe avec plusieurs sens courants : poser (to put down), poser une question (to ask a question) et se poser (to land, to settle). Poser un probleme (to raise a problem) et poser sa candidature (to apply) sont des usages formels.
Se poser en aeronautique signifie atterrir. Se poser des questions (to ask oneself questions, to wonder) est une formule de doute ou reflexion. Poser pour un tableau (to pose for a painting) et prendre la pose (to strike a pose) sont des usages artistiques. Poseur / poseuse designe quelqu'un d'affecte.
