真糟糕(zhēn zāo gāo) - that's awful! in Mandarin

真糟糕 (zhēn zāo gāo) is an exclamation of dismay, "that's awful" or "oh no". It combines 真 (zhēn, "really, truly") with 糟糕 (zāo gāo), an adjective meaning "terrible, in a bad state", which is already mildly exclamatory on its own - 糟糕 (zāo gāo) by itself can mean simply "oh no!".

It reacts to small setbacks rather than genuine tragedy: a missed train, a lost phone, bad weather, a poor exam result. For something more serious an English speaker would reach for a different register in Mandarin too.

真糟糕 (zhēn zāo gāo) sits at a similar emotional pitch to 太糟糕了 (tài zāo gāo le, "how terrible"), just with 真 (zhēn) doing the intensifying instead of the 太...了 (tài...le) frame.
