Con quien, en la que: after a preposition
A person after a preposition takes ; a thing takes or . And or between commas.
The short version
After a preposition, a person takes
Why?Hide
When con, , a or before the relative, bare no longer works for a person: use , or for more than one. The preposition goes in front, never at the end as in English. For a thing, use or : .
After a preposition: con quien, en la que
When a preposition (con, , a, ) comes before the relative, a person takes , or for more than one:
| Preposition | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| con (with) | | the woman I talk to |
| a (to) | | the boy I wrote to |
| con, plural | | the friends I live with |
| (about) | | the man I told you about |
Notice where the preposition goes. English leaves it at the end (the woman I talk to); Spanish puts it in front of the relative.
For a thing, the everyday choice is , , or , agreeing with the noun:
| Noun | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | | the book I told you about |
| feminine | | the house I live in |
| plural | | the days I work |
After , plain also works for a thing: . A person can take the article form too: means the same as . What Spanish avoids is bare for a person after a preposition.
Commas: que or quien
A clause in commas adds an extra fact about someone already identified. Here and are both correct for a person, and the difference is register:
- mi padre, que vive en Madrid, what you hear most
- mi padre, quien vive en Madrid, more careful
, Madrid, .- My father, who lives in Madrid, is coming tomorrow., Madrid, .- The same, a touch more formal.
The formal cousins and are on advanced Spanish relative pronouns.
