Ch 12 · Lesson 24

Lo que, donde: what and where

when there is no noun ( , what I want), for a place, and for a time.

The short version

No noun in front? Use

.

I don't understand what you're saying.
Why?

needs a noun to describe: , the book I want. When there is no noun and English says what, Spanish says : , what I want. can also sum up a whole sentence: , .

lo que: what, with no noun

When there is no noun for the clause to describe, Spanish uses , the thing that or what:

  • . - I don't understand what you' saying.
  • . - What I like is travelling.
  • . - That's what I want.

With a noun in front, it is plain . Compare:

can also sum up a whole sentence:

  • , . - He arrived late, which I didn't like.

The is the neuter article of lo bueno and lo importante.

donde and cuando

joins a clause to a place. It means the same as or :

  • . - The house where I live is small.
  • . - The same.

adds a time in commas:

  • 2010, Madrid, . - In 2010, when I was living in Madrid, I learnt to cook.

Straight after a time noun, Spanish prefers , or in speech plain , to :

  • - the day (that) I arrived
  • - the same, more everyday

With no accent these are relatives; with one, and ask questions. The accented set is on Spanish question words.
