Ch 9 · Lesson 14

Used to, was -ing, it was: what the imperfect is for

Three jobs: a past habit (), an action in progress () and the scene ( , ).

The short version

The imperfect paints the scene

.

It was late and it was raining.
Why?

The imperfect does three jobs: a past habit (used to, would), an action in progress (was -ing) and the background, including the weather, the time and ages. In a story it is the scenery; the preterite is what happened in it.

When to use the imperfect

the imperfect endingone of the three irregularsWhat do the colours mean?

The imperfect does three jobs, and each has a tell in English:

JobExampleEnglish
habit: used to , .As a child I used to play football.
habit: would .On Sundays we would eat with my grandmother.
in progress , .While I was studying, she was cooking.
the scene .It was late and it was raining.
what it was like .The house had a garden.
the time .It was three o'clock.
an age .My brother was ten.

The weather is part of the scene, so it is imperfect too:

Four panels: a grinning sun over an ice cream for sunny and hot; a grey cloud with rain falling on a red umbrella for rainy; a white cloud, snowflakes and a snowman for snowy and cold; a puffing cloud blowing wind and leaves at a bending tree for windy.

  3. Nevaba.
  4. .

Describing the weather in the past: it was sunny, it was raining, it was snowing, it was windy.

In a story the imperfect is the background and the preterite is what happened in it:

  • . - I was reading when the phone rang.

The preterite vs imperfect page shows how the two share out a story.

Words that point to the imperfect

These time words usually come with the imperfect, because they describe habits or the background:

SpanishEnglish
always
every day
normally
often
before, in the old days
while
as a child
when I was young

Hablaba or estaba hablando

Both mean "I was speaking". The plain imperfect is the default, and it also covers habits. in the imperfect plus the gerund stresses an action under way at one moment:

  • . - I was talking to my mother. (or: I used to talk to her)
  • . - I was on the phone when you arrived.

The present progressive page has the gerund forms.
