tea

Word origin

From the Min Nan Chinese pronunciation te, shipped to Europe by Dutch sea traders as thee. Languages that bought their tea overland from Mandarin-speaking regions got cha instead, which is why Russian and Hindi say chai.

Esperanto sits firmly on the sea-trade side of the world's great tea split: belongs with tea, thee and te, against the overland caravan family of chai and cha. A teapot is a tekruĉo, a cup of tea is with because you are measuring a quantity, and the herbal kind is still even when no tea leaf was harmed in making it, exactly as in English.
