Sequencing past tenses

How the three past tenses interlock in real narration: the passe compose moves the story clock forward, the imparfait holds the scene still, and the plus-que-parfait reaches back to the past before the past - plus depuis + imparfait and venir de + imparfait for the background's own timing.
