Fille couvre deux sens principaux : girl (jeune personne féminine) et daughter (relation parentale). Petite fille (little girl) et jeune fille (young woman, maiden) précisent l'âge. Belle-fille (daughter-in-law or stepdaughter) suit la même logique que belle-mère.
Fille dans vieille fille (old maid, spinster) est aujourd'hui considéré péjoratif et désuet. Au pair désigne une jeune femme (souvent étrangère) travaillant comme aide familiale - le terme est emprunté par l'anglais mais d'origine française. Fils est le masculin de fille comme relation parentale, mais garçon est l'antonyme pour le genre.
