Fils se prononce toujours /fis/ - le l est muet et le s est sonore, contrairement à ce qu'attendrait un apprenant. C'est un des mots dont la prononciation est à mémoriser explicitement. Invariable au pluriel : un fils, des fils (both /fis/).
Beau-fils (son-in-law or stepson) suit le modèle de belle-fille. Fils unique (only child, only son) et fils prodigue (prodigal son, from the biblical parable) sont des expressions connues. Fils à papa (daddy's boy) est légèrement péjoratif. Dans Paris est le fils de la Seine, les métaphores de filiation expriment l'origine et l'héritage culturel.
