I went to see my father. "Dad, I have to tell you the truth," I said. "I got a bad mark yesterday. I lied because I was afraid you would be angry."

My father looked at me for a long time. "Why didn't you tell the truth?" he asked. "I was afraid," I said. "But I couldn't keep this lie anymore."

"I prefer a bad mark to a lie," he said. "A mark can be changed. A lie is harder." He was not happy about the mark, but he understood.

Hugo was right: it would all be fine. In the evening, my father helped me work for the next test. And this time, I had no worry in my heart.
