Soir désigne la partie de la journée à partir du coucher du soleil jusqu'au début de la nuit. Il se distingue de nuit (qui implique l'obscurité et le sommeil) et d'après-midi (early afternoon). Ce soir (this evening, tonight) et hier soir (yesterday evening, last night) sont des locutions très fréquentes.

Le soir (in the evening, habitually) s'emploie sans article pour une habitude : je lis le soir. Un beau soir (one fine evening) est une locution narrative. Soir entre dans le composé soirée (evening event, social gathering) : une soirée entre amis. Du matin au soir (from morning to night, all day long) exprime la durée intense.
