Story

, Victor Hugo. . . . . tous . C' .

This morning, I am going to the market at Place Victor Hugo. The weather is nice. The market is full of people. People are talking loudly. I am carrying a big bag in my hand. I have been coming here every morning for ten years. It is my place.

. . ' . . , , . .

I walk past the men making coffee. I walk past an old gentleman with his coffees. I pause for a moment. I do not really know what I want to buy. I am thinking about next week, about work, about my children who are coming home soon. My mind is elsewhere.

, j' . "Lucie? Lucie, c' ?" . , . ' , . . . . .

And then, I hear a voice behind me. "Lucie? Lucie, is that you?" I turn around. In front of me, there is a man. He is not very young, not very old. He is carrying a big bag on his arm. I look at him. I do not know straight away who he is. But there is something in his eyes that I know.

"Mathieu?" . "Mathieu, c' ?" . . . , . Mathieu, l'. l' .

"Mathieu?" I finally say. "Mathieu, is it really you?" He nods. He is very happy. So am I. We stay like that for a moment, without saying a word. Mathieu, my friend from school. I have not seen him in almost half of my life.

"'- ?" . ' . , . . " ? ?" ", . J' . J' , . , ." . ", . , ."

"What are you doing here?" I ask him. He says he has just come back to the city. His family left many years ago, but he has a new job here. He now lives not far from the market. "And you? Are you still here?" "Yes, I am still here. I have two children. I have a husband, a good husband. The marriage is solid." He is happy. "You, married. I did not know that."

We talk for good hour. Mathieu tells what has done during all those years. went far away, to another city, for his job. lost his father three years ago. says these things very quickly, if were afraid of giving too much. listen to him. do not say anything. Sometimes, just need to listen.

. , , . , , . Mathieu c' belle . , c' belle . .

I also tell him a little about my life. My husband, my children, my mother who has grown old. Work, home, the days that go by too quickly. Mathieu says it is a good life. I think yes, it is a good life. But you do not always see it.

l', Mathieu . , . . . l'. . , . ' '. l' . , l' ' .

At school, Mathieu was my best friend. Not my boyfriend, no. My friend. We talked about everything. We went to the cafe after school. We were so happy together. Then one day, his family left. We said we would write to each other. We did not do it. Life goes by, and school friends become names you almost forget.

" ?" . l'. . . . ", . -. ." ' . .

"Do want to grab coffee with ?" asks. look at time. have to go home. My children are about to . say . ", let us go for coffee. Just half hour. My children can wait little." We walk to small at corner of street. We order two coffees.

, . " ," Mathieu. " . ." . , ' . , souvenirs, .

Before leaving, we exchange phone numbers. " want to see again," Mathieu says. "Not in ten years. Before that." say . This time, think we really will see each other again. go home with my full bag, my head full of memories, and slightly happier heart.

, , ' . C' l' .

The market, I think, is not just a place to buy things. It is also a place where life finds you when you are no longer waiting for it.
