/ale/
Translation
to go
Word origin
A verb of mixed origin. Most of its forms come from Latin, but accounts differ on the source of the present stem. The most widely cited is Latin ambulare ('to walk').
- Origin
- Latin
- Root
- ambulare
- English cognates
- amble, ambulance
Other proposed origins
- Most commonly the present forms (aller, allons) are traced to Latin ambulare ('to walk'), heavily reduced phonetically. (ambulare)
- Some accounts derive the aller stem from Latin adnare or alare instead, and the verb is admittedly suppletive, drawing forms from ire (irai) and vadere (vais). (ire / vadere)
