Le détective Bernard est célèbre dans toute la ville. Quand il y a un problème difficile, la police l'appelle. Ce matin, on l'appelle pour une mort étrange dans un grand immeuble.

Detective Bernard is famous throughout the city. When there is a difficult problem, the police call him. This morning, they call him for a strange death in a big building.

Un homme est mort dans son salon. La police pense à un suicide. « Il était seul », dit un agent. « La porte était fermée. Personne n'est entré. » Mais Bernard regarde la pièce avec attention.

A man has died in his living room. The police think it is a suicide. "He was alone," says a police officer. "The door was closed. Nobody came in." But Bernard looks at the room carefully.

Bernard voit une trace sur le sol, près de la fenêtre. Une petite trace de terre. « Cet homme ne s'est pas tué », dit-il. « Quelqu'un est venu par la fenêtre. » Le propriétaire de l'immeuble devient nerveux.

Bernard sees a trace on the floor, near the window. A small trace of earth. "This man did not kill himself," he says. "Someone came in through the window." The owner of the building becomes nervous.

« Regardez sa main », dit Bernard. « Il manque une bague. Cet homme portait toujours une bague célèbre, très chère. Où est-elle maintenant ? » Le propriétaire ne dit rien.

"Look at his hand," says Bernard. "A ring is missing. This man always wore a famous, very expensive ring. Where is it now?" The owner says nothing.

Bernard continue. « Hier soir, quelqu'un est entré ici. Cette personne connaissait l'homme. Elle a pris la bague. Puis elle est partie par la fenêtre, et elle a laissé cette trace de terre. »

Bernard goes on. "Last night, someone came in here. This person knew the man. They took the ring. Then they left through the window, and they left this trace of earth."

« Mais qui ? » demande l'agent. Bernard regarde le propriétaire. « Vous avez la clé de tous les appartements », dit-il. « Et regardez vos mains. Elles ont la même terre que la trace. » Le propriétaire essaie de fuir.

"But who?" asks the officer. Bernard looks at the owner. "You have the key to all the flats," he says. "And look at your hands. They have the same earth as the trace." The owner tries to flee.

La police l'arrête. Dans sa veste, on trouve la bague. « Je... je voulais seulement l'argent », dit le propriétaire. « Vous avez raison. Il ne s'est pas tué. »

The police stop him. In his jacket, they find the ring. "I... I only wanted the money," says the owner. "You are right. He did not kill himself."

« Un homme innocent était mort, et on a presque cru à un suicide », dit Bernard. « Mais une petite trace dit toujours la vérité. » Le propriétaire est emmené par la police.

"An innocent man was dead, and they almost believed it was a suicide," says Bernard. "But a small trace always tells the truth." The owner is taken away by the police.

Le soir, Bernard rentre chez lui. Demain, il y aura un autre problème, une autre ville, une autre trace. C'est son métier. Et il est le meilleur.

In the evening, Bernard goes home. Tomorrow, there will be another problem, another city, another trace. It is his job. And he is the best.
