Un ancien ami

Story

Au café, Mathieu voit un homme à une table. "Tiens," dit-il à Clara. "C'est un ancien ami." Clara regarde l'homme. Il est jeune. "Un ancien ami ? Mais il n'est pas vieux," dit-elle.

At the cafe, Mathieu sees a man at a table. "Look," he says to Clara. "That's an old friend of mine." Clara looks at the man. He is young. "An old friend? But he isn't old," she says.

Mathieu rit. "Un ancien ami, ça ne veut pas dire un vieil ami. Ça veut dire un ami d'avant. On était amis, et puis on ne l'est plus." Clara comprend enfin. "Ah ! Un ancien ami, pas un ami ancien."

Mathieu laughs. "Un ancien ami doesn't mean an old friend. It means a friend from before. We were friends, and then we weren't anymore." Clara finally understands. "Ah! A former friend, not a long-standing friend."

"C'est ça," dit Mathieu. "Si je dis 'un ami ancien', ça veut dire un ami depuis très longtemps. Mais lui, c'est un ancien ami. Un ami du passé." Clara pense que tout ça est vraiment bizarre.

"That's it," says Mathieu. "If I say 'un ami ancien', it means a friend from a long way back. But him, he's un ancien ami. A friend from the past." Clara thinks all this is really strange.

"Pourquoi un ancien ami ?" demande Clara. "Que s'est-il passé ?" Mathieu regarde l'homme un moment. "C'est une vieille histoire," dit-il. "On était jeunes. On travaillait dans le même bureau. Et puis, un jour, tout a changé."

"Why a former friend?" asks Clara. "What happened?" Mathieu looks at the man for a moment. "It's an old story," he says. "We were young. We worked in the same office. And then, one day, everything changed."

"Il a menti," dit Mathieu. "Il a menti une fois, et je ne l'ai plus jamais cru. Un ami qui ment, ce n'est pas un bon ami." Clara ne dit rien. Elle regarde Mathieu, puis l'homme.

"He lied," says Mathieu. "He lied once, and I never believed him again. A friend who lies isn't a good friend." Clara says nothing. She looks at Mathieu, then at the man.

Mais l'homme vient vers eux. "Mathieu ?" dit-il. "C'est toi ?" Il sourit. Mathieu ne dit rien d'abord. Puis : "Salut, Paul. Ça fait longtemps."

But the man comes over to them. "Mathieu?" he says. "Is that you?" He smiles. Mathieu says nothing at first. Then: "Hello, Paul. It's been a long time."

Paul parle, il rit, il demande comment va Mathieu. Mathieu parle un peu, mais sans plus. Clara voit bien : ce n'est plus un ami, c'est un ancien ami.

Paul talks, he laughs, he asks how Mathieu is doing. Mathieu talks a little, but no more than that. Clara sees it clearly: he is no longer a friend, he is a former friend.

Quand Paul part, Clara demande : "Alors, c'est fini, entre vous ?" Mathieu pense un moment. "Le temps passe," dit-il. "Mais un ancien ami reste un ami, quelque part." Clara aime cette idée.

When Paul leaves, Clara asks: "So, is it over, between you two?" Mathieu thinks for a moment. "Time passes," he says. "But a former friend is still a friend, somewhere." Clara likes that idea.
