est un nom féminin désignant le bâtiment (une belle maison) et le foyer (à la maison = at home). À la maison est la locution standard pour "at home" - à distinguer de chez moi/nous (at my/our place). Rentrer à la maison (to go home) est l'expression la plus courante pour le retour au foyer.
Maison fonctionne aussi comme adjectif invariable qualifiant ce qui est fait maison : une tarte maison, une salade maison. Dans les entreprises, la maison mère (the parent company) et à la maison (in-house) utilisent maison métaphoriquement. Maison d'édition (publishing house) et maison de retraite (retirement home) sont des syntagmes courants.
