Ch 1 · Lesson 1

How Italian works

The gentlest of the major languages to start, and the work sits in two verbs. Here is what is easy, what is not, and why.

The short version

  • Spelling is almost perfectly phonetic. A word you can read is a word you can say, which removes a whole category of difficulty.
  • Two verbs hold up the language. and are irregular almost everywhere and every compound tense is built from them. Learn both cold.
  • The articles follow the sound of the next word. Once you hear why exists (try saying ), the choice between and stops needing a table.
  • This course is ten chapters and about 1,000 words, with a short story at the end of every chapter. That takes you through A1 and into A2. A separate GCSE track follows the Pearson Edexcel exam.
