Faccio, vado, posso: the irregulars you need most
, and break the pattern because you say them constantly, and , and take a plain infinitive.
The short version
The hardest Italian verbs are the ones you need first
.
Why?Hide
, , , , , , and are all irregular, and that is not bad luck. A verb used a hundred times a day gets learned whole by every child and never gets tidied into the regular pattern. Frequency protects irregularity, in Italian as in English.
The irregulars are the ones you need
A few dozen verbs break the pattern, and the handful below are the ones you say most. They are irregular because they are frequent: a verb used constantly is learned whole by every child, so it never gets tidied into the pattern. English kept go / went for the same reason.
Four of them in their form, with the infinitive beside it:
| Infinitive | io form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| | . - I'm well. |
| | . - I don't know. |
| | . - I'm going out now. |
| | . - I'm coming too. |
and have a lesson of their own. Here are three more, with the endings that survive coloured:
| Person | fare (do) | andare (go) | dire (say) |
|---|---|---|---|
| | | |
| | | |
/ | | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
?- What are you doing?.- I'm going home..- He's telling the truth.
Most of the endings are still the regular ones: ends in -o, in -iamo. What breaks is the stem. and are shortened Latin facere and dicere, and the long stems fac- and dic- come back in many forms:
- we do- I say- we say
Potere, volere and dovere
The three modal verbs break in the same places, so learn them together:
| Person | potere (can) | volere (want) | dovere (must) |
|---|---|---|---|
| | | |
| | | |
/ | | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
Each is followed by a plain infinitive, with nothing in between. English puts to after want and have; Italian never adds anything:
.- I can do this..- I want to see the house..- I have to go home.
Mistakes English speakers make
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| modals take a plain infinitive | |
| the ending is always -i | |
| capisciamo | | no -isc- in and |
| parlono | | -are verbs take -ano |
| every time | | the ending says who; drop |
| cerci | | -care keeps its hard c with an h |
