Ch 1 · Lesson 24

Capisco, capiamo: the -isc- verbs

Many -ire verbs slip -isc- in before the ending: , , , . and go without it.

The short version

has -isc-, does not

. .

I don't understand. We understand.
Why?

Many -ire verbs, , and among them, slip -isc- in before the ending for , , and , and . and go without it: , . The infinitive does not tell you which verbs do this, so learn it with the verb, and start with .

The -isc- verbs

A large group of -ire verbs inserts -isc- between stem and ending in four persons, , , / and . Capire (to understand) is the one you need first:

io capisco, I understand
PersoncapireExample
. - I don't understand.
? - Do you understand?
/ . - She understands everything.
. - We understand.
? - Do you all understand?
. - They understand.

and go without it. The infinitive does not tell you which -ire verbs do this, so learn it per verb:

  • . - I finish at eight. (finire takes -isc-)
  • . - I prefer this. (preferire takes -isc-)
  • . - I sleep well. ( does not)
