The impersonal se: aquí se vive bien
for one, you or people, always singular. The agreement test that tells it from the passive , the personal a, and with reflexive verbs.
The short version
The impersonal always stays singular
.
Why?Hide
With no thing as its subject, means one, you or people, and the verb stays singular: , , a . After the personal a it stays singular too: a . With a reflexive verb, use instead: .
The impersonal se: one, you, people
The impersonal has no thing as its subject. It means a general one, you or people, and the verb stays singular:
| Who | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| anyone | . | Life is good here. |
| anyone | . | The food is good in this bar. |
| people | . | People work hard in this firm. |
| you | . | You can't smoke here. |
| they | . | They say it's going to rain. |
It is , never , for "they say".
Reflexive verbs take uno
A reflexive verb already has its own , and Spanish never puts two together. For a general "you" with a reflexive verb, use :
.- You get used to anything..- In summer you get up earlier.
Telling them apart: follow the agreement
Look for a noun that could be the subject. If there is one, the verb agrees with it:
| Sentence | Subject | Which se |
|---|---|---|
. | | passive |
. | | passive |
. | none | impersonal |
. | none | impersonal |
The near-pair shows it best:
.- A lot of potatoes are eaten here..- The food is good here.
Many grammars, the RAE's among them, analyse and as a passive whose subject is the whole clause. The verb is singular either way.
People after se: the personal a
A specific person after takes the personal a, and a noun with a in front cannot be a subject. So the verb stays singular, even next to a plural noun:
.- The people responsible are being sought..- The neighbours were helped.
In a small ad the people are not specific, there is no a, and the verb agrees:
.- Waiters wanted.
