Ch 41 · Lesson 9

tú or usted?

Getting this wrong is not a grammar . It is a social one.

The rule

is for friends, family, children, and colleagues roughly your own age once you are on first-name terms (in Spain that usually happens on day one). is for a stranger older than you, an official, a customer, or anyone you want to keep at a polite distance. Spanish moves to much faster than French moves off vous, but with an adult you do not know, start with : the move down to is theirs to offer, not yours.

Pick the right one

Pick the right one: tú or usted.

  1. A un policía: ¿Puede ayudarme?

  2. A un hermano: ¿Puedes ayudarme?

  3. A un niño en la calle: ¿Estás perdido?

  4. Al director de la empresa: ¿Tiene un momento?

  5. A un amigo de siempre: ¿Vienes conmigo?

  6. A una señora mayor que no conoces: ¿Necesita ayuda?

You met this in chapter 4. Worth a second look if the drill caught you out.
