Ch 1 · Lesson 45

Saluton! Your first conversation

Six phrases that get you through the first minute with any Esperantist in the world.

Why these go together

You have just met every word in these, one at a time. Put together, they are the first minute of every Esperanto conversation there has ever been. Notice the -n on : you are wishing someone a good day, so the day is the object of a verb nobody bothers to say.

  • !

    Hello!

  • !

    Good day! (a polite hello)

Literally: good day (I wish you)

  • ?

    How are you?

    Literally: how do you fare?

  • , .

    I am well, thank you.

  • ?

    What is your name?

    Literally: how are you called?

  • !

    Bye! See you!

    Literally: until!
