Ch 2 · Lesson 37

How to learn Esperanto: the plateau traps

Recognition outrunning production, course-hopping, and the trap the language has a name for: the .

The short version

Beware the

do not remain an eternal beginner
Why?

The community has a word for the learner who circles beginner courses forever: , the eternal beginner. The escape is production - write a diary, speak at events, let the graded readers pull you up level by level. Recognising ten thousand words you have never once produced is the plateau; using two thousand is fluency.

The plateau traps

Recognition against production

You recognise far more than you produce, and Esperanto widens the gap because recognition is so cheap:

  • - a lazy person (- + work + -- + --): obvious on sight, hard to reach for.

The ten-second test: shut the book and say three sentences about your day out loud. If that is harder than reading a page, more reading will not fix it.

The eterna komencanto

The carries under the root komenc, tagged for both and pedagogy, and defines it:

  • , as , - lingvoregon. - A learner who stays at the basic level, without progress; as regards Esperanto, never reaches sufficient command of the language.

ReVo's earliest citation is Ivo Lapenna's o (1974). Lapenna, a former UEA president, ties it to a dangerous complex that Esperanto is worth less: a diagnosis of the movement, not the learner. The second citation is from in 2006.

You can see the shape in Amikumu, the app that shows nearby speakers. Esperanto is its second-largest language at around 16,600 users. The levels are self-declared, so this is a survey, not a measurement:

LevelUsers
beginner10,000
intermediate4,200
advanced2,000
native292

That bottom-heavy pyramid is exactly the shape describes.

Course-hopping

The most seductive trap, because it feels like work. Free beginner material is plentiful and all pitched at the same level, so you can spend two years going round the first three months. The middle of the curve, past the beginner course and short of a novel, is the stretch you have to cross.

Our Duolingo Esperanto review covers what it teaches. None of these takes you past the beginning, and none claims to. The step after any of them is rungs four, five and six.
