Ch 2 · Lesson 31

Telling the time

Kioma ? . The clock is plus an ordinal, at is , and minutes join with : built entirely from the numbers you already have.

What time is it

The question is Kioma ?, literally the how-manyeth hour is it?: (how many) with the adjective ending. The answer is plus an ordinal:

12369
3:00Estas la tria.It is three o'clock.
TimeEsperantoEnglish
1:00 .It is one o'clock.
3:00 .It is three o'clock.
12:00 -.It is twelve o'clock.

is usually dropped, because already means the third hour. Both are fine:

  • . - It is three o'clock.

To say at a time, use :

  • . - I will come at three.
  • . - The film starts at eight.

is the preposition Esperanto keeps for jobs no other preposition claims, and clock time is its commonest one. The prepositions article has the rest.

Minutes, halves and quarters

Minutes join the hour with , counting forwards from the hour that has struck. Before the next hour, use :

  • :31-:59Before the next hour: antaĆ (kvarono antaĆ la kvara)
  • . - It is half past three.
  • o . - It is a quarter to four.

is half past three, never half past two. German halb vier reaches towards the coming hour; Esperanto counts forwards, the English way.

For timetables and invitations, use the 24-hour clock and read the number straight:

  • - . - The meeting starts at 15:00.

Noon is and midnight , both with . The parts of the day work best as -e adverbs:
