Ch 2 · Lesson 31

Noun plurals: le temps, les temps

Add -s, say nothing - / and / carry the plural in speech.

The short version

The plural lives in the article, not the noun

the things
Why?

The written rule is add -s; the spoken rule is that the -s is silent. Chose and sound identical, so the only audible plural marker is the article: and against , and against . Train the ear on that vowel contrast and you stop missing plurals.

The written rule: add -s

For the overwhelming majority of nouns, the plural is the singular plus -s.

SingularPluralEnglish
the tables
the books
(some) friends
(some) houses

In a sentence: . - The children are eating.

The spoken rule: the article carries the plural

Say these pairs out loud. The noun does not change; only the article does.

SingularPluralSounds like
shoz, lay shoz
luh tahn, lay tahn
shoz, day shoz

So and become , and and become . In English you hear the noun change (cat, cats); in French you hear the article.

On a table, a single smiling apple sits on a plate on the left, and three smiling apples share a plate on the right.

Say both aloud: la pomme, les pommes. The word pomme sounds the same; only la to les tells you there are more.

There is one clue. Before a vowel, sounds a z between the plural article and the noun:

  • - the friends, said "layz-"
  • - (some) children, said "dayz-ahn-fahn"

That z is the ghost of the plural -s, and it only appears before a vowel.

Exception 5: nouns in -s, -x and -z never change

If the singular already ends in -s, -x or -z, the plural is spelled the same. Only the article moves.

the times
the arms
the voices
the prices
the noses

In a sentence: . - The prices are good. Note that , one of the commonest nouns in French, is in this group.

Going further: Exception 1: -eau and -eu take -x and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
