Fond est un nom masculin avec plusieurs sens : le fond (bottom) d'un récipient ou d'une étendue d'eau, le fond (back) d'une pièce ou d'un couloir, et au sens figuré le fond (essence, substance) d'une question. Au fond (at the end of the day, basically) est une locution adverbiale très courante.
À fond (thoroughly, at full speed) est une locution intensive : travailler à fond (to work flat out). Dans le fond est synonyme de au fond. Le fond du problème (the heart of the problem) et aller au fond des choses (to get to the bottom of things) sont des expressions utiles.
