Fond est un nom masculin avec plusieurs sens : le fond (bottom) d'un recipient ou d'une etendue d'eau, le fond (back) d'une piece ou d'un couloir, et au sens figure le fond (essence, substance) d'une question. Au fond (at the end of the day, basically) est une locution adverbiale tres courante.
A fond (thoroughly, at full speed) est une locution intensive : travailler a fond (to work flat out). Dans le fond est synonyme de au fond. Le fond du probleme (the heart of the problem) et aller au fond des choses (to get to the bottom of things) sont des expressions utiles.
