The workhorse conjunction of Latin, and the commonest word in the language: it joins two words, two phrases or two whole clauses, exactly as English "and" does. Repeat it for emphasis and you get "et ... et ...", meaning "both ... and ...", as in "et pater et mater" (both the father and the mother).
Latin has three other words for "and", and they are not interchangeable. "atque" (or "ac") is heavier and adds weight to what follows, "-que" is tacked onto the end of the second word rather than standing free, and "nec" is "and not". "et" is the neutral default, which is why it outnumbers all of them.
