Meet the Real Academia Española

Spain's language academy, founded in 1713. It does not rule alone: it writes the dictionary and the grammar together with the Spanish academies of the Americas and beyond. Look up a word you already know.

A language this established has real institutions behind it - academies that publish the official dictionary and grammar, and cultural networks that teach and champion Spanish around the world. Meeting them now gives you the reference points every serious learner ends up using.

Open the site and have a look around. You won't understand most of it yet - that's fine. Spotting even one or two words you already know on a real page is the point.

Read it in Spanish

La Real Academia Española hace el diccionario con las otras academias del español. Hay una en casi todos los países donde se habla español.

The Real Academia Española writes the dictionary together with the other Spanish academies. There is one in almost every country where Spanish is spoken.
